What is Geocaching, you ask?

Quite simply it's playing hide-n-seek using multi-million dollar satellites!

Okay, so there's a little more to it than that.

The
Geocaching home page, geocaching is...

"... a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the
world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices..."

Basically, you go out and hunt for hidden containers, called "geocaches", or "caches", then log
your finds and experiences online. Geocaching is a family-friendly hobby... some consider it a
sport. It's a great way to get out and see places you might otherwise never see. It's also good
exercise. I've been doing it now since September 2009, and I'm hooked!

My Geocaching name is GeoVikingDude which is my mascot that you see in the background of
this page.

Getting started is easy! Go to

EarthCaches are really cool, and I look forward to
doing more of them when I can.

Benchmarks

Earthcaches
A benchmark is a position that is known to a very high degree of accuracy, and is
normally marked in some way, often with a metal disk, or a metal rod driven into
the ground. Benchmarks are used by land surveyors and others.

Other kinds of benchmarks include radio towers and elevated water tanks. These
are a lot easier to find that the disks or metal rods.

For more information on benchmarks, visit
www.geocaching.com.

Thus far, I've found and logged a few water tanks and radio towers near home.
Waymarking
Waymarking is a way to mark and share unique locations on the planet.
Waymarking is a tool for categorizing and adding information for such locations.

A waymark is a physical location marked by coordinates. I've found and logged a
few waymarks around home, including monuments, highway markers and
courthouses.
