| Mike, what a great site you developed. I was always hoping someone would do such a site, so far the site looks great. Black Node was such a great time. Do you think anyone still has any Black Node plaques with the model Blackhawk mounted in it? Once you left all that went to hell. I will search some old pics to see if I have anything worth sending. | Michael, I ran across your website while searching for info on the 122nd Signal Battalion. I too was in Black Node. I arrived in Korea in May of 1988, shortly before the 1988 Olympics. I was first assigned to Charlie Company in Black Node but a bunch of us got sent down to Alpha Company because there was a shortage of Cable Dogs. I ended up in the DMain Platoon there. I was a Cable Dog, 31L. Man, what a time that was, TDC and all. I was in Black Node long enough to go on a field trip and go through hooking up the vans to the Blackhawks and flying up to the top of some hill in the middle of who knows where. I was also at Fort Gordon in the 258th Cable Company from the time I got out of AIT in 1985 until I went to Korea '88. Wild times there too. Did you ever go down to the Golden Gate Lounge right down the road from Gate 1? Drank many a pitcher of beer in that Korean joint. Back to Black Node, I was really kind of glad to be sent down to A Company because like I said, we were over staffed and there was about 18 of us crammed in a quansahut (or however you spell it). I got down there to those 4-man rooms and thought I was in a Condo. I was looking on Google Earth, and the whole area where 122 was located has changed. All of those huts and NCO barracks are gone. I know they had started building new barracks when I was there but they did not have them completed when I left. Does the 122 still exist, or do you know? Eddie Hill |
| Hey Mike, Wow, what a blast from the past! Somehow, I was perusing the web tonight and came across your Black Node website. What a nice find, because you also had a link to KC-39er, the FM retrans installation up on Hill 754. Two things I am very familiar with! I was assigned to Black Node March 26, 1987, smack dab in the middle of Team Spirit! I had just arrived in country on the 21st and spent a few days in-processing at the 2ID Turtle Farm, before being dropped off at the Alpha 122 Signal Barracks. I knew that Team Spirit was going on, but figured that since I just got to the unit, I'd have it cake for a few weeks till everyone got back! Boy was I wrong, as soon as I saw 1SG Allen walk out (with camo on his face) to greet the few of us that were dropped off, I knew that that was not going to be the case! After grabbing our gear, he took us into the orderly room, where a blonde female SP4 Palmer (who I became good friends with) processed us in, giving us our room keys, and taking us to the arms room to get our weapons and NBC gear issued. The the bad news, 1SG Allen, told us that we had yada yada amount of time to get our bags stowed in our lockers and our rucks loaded up to head out! Well after we did that, we fell out front of the barracks, and there was Captain Hadfield's CUCV Blazer and a couple Duce and a Halfs waiting for us. 1SG Allen read off different people's names, and told us what vehicle we were going to ride in, I was told to get in the Blazer. We then all loaded up and rolled out the front gate. My trip was short as Janice (Blonde SP4), pulls right up to Camp Mobile. Top tells me I am going to Black Node, and would be flying to where I was by a UH-60! Funny when I think back on it, because I thought it was only a temporary thing for Team Spirit! Well I was dropped off, and told to wait for SFC Madden who would be coming with some repaired equipment that was going to wherever this Node place was. Anyway, he shows up, we got on the Blackhawk, and off we went. What an experience, I think we came back in the middle of April when Team Spirit was over! I saw on your website, you wanted to know who the female was who came in '87. Actually there were 2 with Black Node before moving to Charlie later that summer. One was a West Point Cadet Masters, and then there was Kim (SGT Hosner), better known as Spoot FOAD! I was trying to look at the picture you have on the website, because I have the same one somewhere! It was taken, I thought, right after Team Spirit, and I think that SGT Hosner is the 6th person over (L-R) / 3rd over (R-L) on the bottom row kneeling. The Cadet did not come until May or June, so she is not in the photo. Some more people to add names to photo: (BTW, there are 15 of us in back row) SPC Curless (Me - Back Row 12th over (L-R) / 4th over (R-L) SPC Higa - Bottom Row 3rd over (L-R) / 6th over (R-L) SPC Thornburg (Jibs Patrol) - Back Row 1st over (L-R) / 15th over (R-L) KATUSA's SGT Joo - Back Row 7th over (L-R) / 9th over (R-L) PFC Park - Bottom Row 5th over (L-R) / 4th over (R-L) I think I can make out Westbrook, Lacour and Sullivan, but I want to dig out the picture I have somewhere to be sure, I think I had written everyone's name on the back! Sorry this is so long, but sort of cool thing you got going on for the Original Black Node Airmobile Platoon! I did not move over to Charlie, I stayed in Alpha and sort of had a cake job, doing courier stuff and running up Hill 754 once a day bringing up repaired radios and picking up ones for repair. Did that until I DEROSed back to the States in March of '88. I am definately going to join the Yahoo group! Again, sorry for the lengthy message, but you sure did bring back some memories. Michael P. | Thank You for reminding me of one of the best years I served. Black node, 31M,Charlie, 1992. Came to Casey on Jan 2nd, left on Dec 22nd. Team Spirit was cancelled that year, and I had no desire to reenlist for MSE training. I remember well the old Happy Mound on Hill 441, as well as this old Florida boy discovering real cold there, and snow. Good Times there, good times (SPC4) Skeens, Jessie Dug out an old Pic from then for you. Hill 441, taking a break before sling-setting a rig for liftoff. I'm the guy on the Mike rig, KATUSA Park (Park of course), in the lower right corner, another Katusa (forgot the name) seen from the back. (SPC) Skeens 1992, month unknown and yes, it was that damn cold!! |
