| Welcome to the home of one of the most unique Signal Platoons in the US Army Signal Corps during the latter part of the Cold War: Black Node - Airmobile! 122nd Signal Battalion was responsible to supply the backbone tactical communications for the 2nd Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea. There were initially three Nodes which formed the backbone of 2nd ID Command and Control. These were Black, Red, and Gold Nodes. In 1991 an additional Node - Blue - was formed to increase the capabilities of Division communications, thereby enabling it to cover an even greater Area of Operations. Of all the Nodes, Black Node was unique. Red, Gold, and Blue Nodes were limited to deploying to locations that were accessible by wheeled vehicles. Black Node, however, was Airmobile. It could quickly deploy to any mountain in the Division AO and quickly establish secure tactical communications. Black Node was in Alpha Company (until 1987) and Charlie Company (after 1987), 122nd Signal Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea. In the middle 1990s 122d Signal Battalion was reorganized when it switched over to MSE communications systems. This was the end of the four Nodes. 122nd Signal Battalion was deactivated on 28 June 2005 at Camp Red Cloud, Korea. However 122nd Signal Battalion and Black Node now share a special place in our memories of a time when we were all much younger, and the world a very different place. We hope this website will help keep those memories alive, and preserve a small part of the 106 year history of 122nd Signal Battalion. I am Sergeant Mike. I did two tours in Black Node: A-122 from 1986 to 1987 and C-122 from 1990 to 1991. I have the honour to be your host. I originally put this site together as a place to share photos of my time in Black Node. Now this site is slowly evolving from not only a place to share my memories, but also some memories of other Veterans of Black Node. I am hoping to piece together a history and a roster of Black Node, and the men and women that made it such a great platoon. If you served in Black Node at any time, send me an email (sgt.mike@live.com) with any photos or stories you would like to share and see posted here. We also have a Yahoo! Group and a Facebook Page specifically for all Black Node Veterans. Currently 25 Veterans have rejoined "the Node." Over time, I hope more of our Comrades find us, and decide to join us in celebration and memory of what was truly a great Platoon. It is my hope to have a Black Node reunion in the near future. I will also be updating my "Memoirs of a 'Cold War' Signal Soldier" which will include sections devoted to the other units I served in, as well as a section devoted to my favorite hobbies: War Between The States Reenacting and Geocaching. The whole site is being updated, so please check back from time to time to see how things develop. Thanks for dropping by. Sergeant Mike |
